While there have been many monographs of Le Corbusier, this is the definitive edition. It is the set of volumes that inspired everyone from Alvar Aalto to Zaha Hadid, shaping the way we look at Modern Architecture.
There is a typo in the number of pages. This set is massive but it doesn’t weigh in at 176,000 pages. The 8 volumes, about 200 pages each, were originally released individually from 1929 to 1969 with Boesinger and Stonorov working directly with Le Corbusier. These are the original drawings and photographs, so if you are looking for glossy prints of Corbu’s more famous works, I suggest purchasing monographs by Kenneth Frampton or William Curtis, which have contemporary photos of his better known buildings. Also, much of the text is not translated, presented in the original French. You have to have a great appreciation for Corbu’s work to consider such a purchase, but given how rare first editions are, not to mention expensive, this is the best price by far for this invaluable collection.

Now, Autodesk 3ds Max 2010 builds on this success with powerful new toolsets to help you shape your worlds the way you want, manage complex scenes with ease, and take advantage of unprecedented support for software interoperability and pipeline integration.
What’s New?
Innovative Graphite Modeling Toolset
Create models quickly and efficiently with the new Graphite modeling toolset. Graphite takes 3ds Max polygon modeling to a new level by delivering over 100 tools for advanced polygonal modeling and freeform design. Because the Graphite tools are displayed in one central location, it‘s easy to find the tools you need for the job. With Graphite you can customize the tool display or hide the command panel and model in Expert Mode
Material Explorer
Easily manage complex scenes using the new Material Explorer, a productivity-enhancing toolset that simplifies the way users interact with objects and materials. Use it to quickly browse and replace materials in your scene, and to view material properties and relationships.
Integrated mental mill Technology
Develop, test, and maintain powerful mental mill® shaders and shader graphs―right inside 3ds Max. As the first 3D modeling and animation program to integrate mental mill technology, 3ds Max 2010 gives you real-time visual feedback, enabling even the novice user to create sophisticated, hardware-agnostic shaders.
PFlowAdvanced Particle Effects
Incorporate sophisticated particle effects into your 3ds Max scenes with PFlowAdvanced, a toolset of 12 new operators including precision painting, for manually specifying where particles will emit; and Shape Plus, an enhanced selection of 2D and 3D shapes. PFlowAdvanced also includes a range of utilities and grouping operators, and the PFlowElements library with over 100 element samples created by leaders in the 3D effects industry.
Containers
The new Containers toolset in 3ds Max facilitates collaboration and flexible workflows by enabling users to collect multiple objects of a complex scene into a single container. Place related objects―such as sections of a city―in a container and treat them as a single element. To improve scene performance, temporarily unload containers from the viewport display while maintaining their relationships to the scene and reload later when needed―saving memory, increasing viewport performance, and decreasing load and save times. Translate, delete, copy, or save container nodes; use containers to override object properties for scene organization without affecting layer organization (similar to a nested layer workflow); and reference multiple containers created by others into a single scene so users can work together in context. Users can access and edit each other’s container, allowing flexible workflows while also imposing constraints on what can be edited.
Review 3
Take the guesswork out of your final renders with Review 3—a major advancement in viewport display. Review 3 now offers support for ambient occlusion, High Dynamic Range Image (HDRI)-based lighting, soft shadows, hardware anti-aliasing, interactive exposure control, and the revolutionary mental mill shader technology.
xView Mesh Analyzer
Reduce errors in your pipeline with the new xView mesh analyzer technology, a powerful tool with live in-viewport reporting that helps you quickly and efficiently resolve mesh errors, such as overlapping UVs, duplicate faces, and isolated vertices. The xView analyzer speeds the testing of models and maps, and lets you add your own specific tests and queries.
OBJ Import
Easily import and export 3D model data between 3ds Max and Autodesk® Mudbox™ software―as well as other third-party 3D digital sculpting applications―with improved OBJ plug-in performance and expanded file-format support. Enhanced features enable you to view OBJ files for texture coordinates and smoothing groups, and choose from options for importing normals, triangulating polygons on import, and saving normal and polygon import presets for future use.
ProOptimizer
Quickly and intelligently optimize your high-poly-count 3D models. ProOptimizer enables you to precisely control the number of faces or points in your scene or model by removing useful faces last to reduce a selection up to 75 percent without loss of detail. Scenes can be optimized in real time or batch optimized. ProOptimizer technology maintains all UV-texture-channel and vertex-color-channel information, respects the symmetry of models, preserves explicit normals, and gives you the option to protect or exclude object borders.
ProSound
Sync your audio playback with the viewport and render your track to match the playback speed with the new ProSound multitrack audio system. Add up to 100 audio tracks to your scene and animate the volume of each track; the technology also supports both PCM and compressed audio in AVI and WAV format with up to six output channels.
Global Quality Knobs: mental ray
Quickly dial up or down overall quality settings for shadows, glossy refractions or glossy reflections with global quality knobs along with image anti-aliasing and indirect illumination quality.
Performance Improvements
Work more efficiently with expanded multiprocessor support. Mesh-display processing algorithms and analytical calculations performed by the new xView mesh analyzer have been multithreaded for increased productivity. These improvements build on the many graphical processing unit (GPU) optimizations of earlier 3ds Max versions to give users a much more responsive viewport experience.
C# and .NET Support
Customize, extend, and integrate 3ds Max 2010 into your existing pipelines with improved support for C# and .NET; a new MAXScript debugger with line-number support helps identify problems in customized scripts.

A superb visual reference to the principles of architecture
For more than thirty years, the beautifully illustrated Architecture: Form, Space, and Order has been the classic introduction to the basic vocabulary of architectural design. The updated Third Edition features expanded sections on circulation, light, views, and site context, along with new considerations of environmental factors, building codes, and contemporary examples of form, space, and order.
This classic visual reference helps both students and practicing architects understand the basic vocabulary of architectural design by examining how form and space are ordered in the built environment.? Using his trademark meticulous drawing, Professor Ching shows the relationship between fundamental elements of architecture through the ages and across cultural boundaries. By looking at these seminal ideas, Architecture: Form, Space, and Order encourages the reader to look critically at the built environment and promotes a more evocative understanding of architecture.

The first book of the sequel, followed by ” The Third Wave” and “Power shift”.

INTRODUCTION
This is a book about what happens to people when they are overwhelmed by change. It is about the ways in which we adapt—or fail to adapt—to the future. Much has been written about the future. Yet, for the most part, books about the world to come sound a harsh metallic note. These pages, by contrast, concern themselves with the “soft” or human side of tomorrow. Moreover, they concern themselves with the steps by which we are likely to reach tomorrow. They deal with common, everyday matters—the products we buy and discard, the places we leave behind, the corporations we inhabit, the people who pass at an ever faster clip through our lives. The future of friendship and family life is probed. Strange new subcultures and life styles are investigated, along with an array of other subjects from politics and playgrounds to skydiving and sex.

INTRODUCTION
In a time when terrorists play death-games with hostages, as currencies careen amid rumors of a third World War, as embassies flame and storm troopers lace up their boots in many lands, we stare in horror at the headlines. The price of gold—that sensitive barometer of fear—breaks all records. Banks tremble. Inflation rages out of control. And the governments of the world are reduced to paralysis or imbecility. Faced with all this, a massed chorus of Cassandras fills the air with doom-song. The proverbial man hi the street says the world has “gone mad,” while the expert points to all the trends leading toward catastrophe. This book offers a sharply different view.

Surrealism and Architecture examines a long overlooked topic: the relationship of surrealist thought to architectural theory and practice. This is a historically informed examination of architecture’s perceived absence in surrealist thought, surrealist tendencies in the theories and projects of modern architecture and the place of surrealist thought in contemporary design methods and theories.
This book represents the most current insights into the historical and contemporary relationships of surrealism in the thought and practice of modern architecture. Of all the artistic modernism affecting the design of buildings and cities, only surrealism has remained unexplored, yet the surrealist critiques of rationalism, orthodoxy, and the spatial production of meaning have a place in the history of modernism. In the 20 essays, the role of the subconscious, the techniques of defamiliarization, aesthetic and social forces affecting the objects, interiors, cities and landscapes of the 20th century arerevealed in the works of Breton, Dali, Aragon, Le Corbusier, Neimeyer, Kiefer, Hejduk, Tschumi, and others ranging across the history of modern art and architecture. The book contains a diversity of voices, methodologies, and insights to bring into sharp focus what is often suppressed in the histories of the modernist avant-garde. This comprehensive collection examines the theoretical, visual, and spatial practices of writers, artists, architects, and urbanists with particular emphasis on the critique of the everyday world-view, offering alternative models of subjectivity, artistic effect, and the production of meanings in the built world.
With the renewed interest in the surrealist movement, this timely collection of illustrated essays is the first to look at the architectural possibilities of this distinct modern artistic movement which was interdisciplinary and international. This book offers a model for a new approach to historically rigorous analysis of interdisciplinary artistic practice. It will be of interest to scholars in the histories of modernism, students and practitioners of art and architecture, cultural studies, and urban studies.

Philosophy and Design: From Engineering to Architecture is a significant contribution to the expanding field of design studies. It brings questions of design into philosophy and thereby brings diverse philosophical perspectives to bear on conceptual, methodological, epistemological, metaphysical, and ethical issues of design. It is also the first collection of philosophical papers to bridge the divide between critical reflections on design in engineering and in architecture. After the publication of this well edited collection, it will be difficult for philosophy to ignore design as a theme as worthy of attention as such phenomena as scientific theory, aesthetic creativity, or political law. Indeed, as a phenomenon design may well span theory, creativity, and law in ways that can contribute to a deeper understanding of each and to their mutual relations. In addition, this collection is to be commended for the interdisciplinary character of many of its contributions and the multinational perspectives provided by its diverse contributors from Europe, North America, and Japan.

Revised to incorporate the changes in opinions and attitudes since its first publication, the second edition of ‘Places of the Soul’ has brought Christopher Day’s classic text into the 21st century. This new edition of the seminal text reminds us that true sustainable design does not simply mean energy efficient building. Sustainable buildings must provide for the ’soul’. For Christopher Day architecture is not just about a building’s appearance, but how the building is experienced. ‘Places of the Soul’ presents buildings as environment, intrinsic to their surroundings, and offers design principles that will open the eyes of the architecture student and professional alike, presenting ideas quite different to the orthodoxy of modern architectural education. Christopher Day’s experience as an architect, self-builder, professor and sculptor have all added to the development of his ideas that encompass issues of economic and social sustainability, commercial pressures and consensus design. This book presents these ideas and outlines universal principles that will be of interest and value to architects, builders, planners and developers alike. * Author is leading authority in this field and has a throng of devoted admirers * 1st edition is considered a classic in the industry and it has been renewed for the 21st century * Sustainability and environmental design is one of the key areas of interest and study for architects today

Over 70 percent of Americans cannot afford to own a code-enforced, contractor-built home. This has led to widespread interest in using natural materials, straw, cob, and earth-for building homes and other buildings that are inexpensive, and that rely largely on labor rather than expensive and often environmentally-damaging outsourced materials.
Earthbag Building is the first comprehensive guide to all the tools, tricks, and techniques for building with bags filled with earth or earthbags. Having been introduced to sandbag construction by the renowned Nader Khalili in 1993, the authors developed this “Flexible Form Rammed Earth Technique” over the last decade. A reliable method for constructing homes, outbuildings, garden walls and much more, this enduring, tree-free architecture can also be used to create arched and domed structures of great beauty-in any region, and at home, in developing countries, or in emergency relief work. This profusely illustrated guide first discusses the many merits of earthbag construction, and then leads the reader through the key elements of an earthbag building: • Special design considerations • Foundations, walls and floors • Electrical, plumbing and shelving • Lintels, windows and door installations • Roofs, arches and domes • Exterior and interior plasters. With dedicated sections on costs, making your own specialized tools, and building code considerations, as well as a complete resources guide, Earthbag Building is the long-awaited, definitive guide to this uniquely pleasing construction style. Kaki Hunter and Donald Kiffmeyer have been involved in the construction industry for the last 20 years, specializing in affordable, low-tech, low-impact building methods that are as natural as possible. They developed the “Flexible Form Rammed Earth Technique” of building affordably with earthbags and have taught the subject and contributed their expertise to several books and journals on natural building.

Since its publication in 1982 Sir Bernard Feilden’s Conservation of Historic Buildings has become the standard text for architects and others involved in the conservation of historic structures. Leading practitioners around the world have praised the book as being the most significant single volume on the subject to be published. This third edition revises and updates a classic book, including completely new sections on conservation of Modern Movement buildings and non-destructive investigation.
. The result of the lifetime’s experience of one of the world’s leading architectural conservators, the book comprehensively surveys the fundamental principles of conservation in their application to historic buildings, and provides the basic information needed by architects, engineers and surveyors for the solution of problems of architectural conservation in almost every climatic region of the world. This edition is organized into three complementary parts: in the first the structure of buildings is dealt with in detail; the second focuses attention on the causes of decay and the materials they affect; and the third considers the practical role of the architect involved in conservation and rehabilitation. As well as being essential reading for architects and others concerned with conservation, many lay people with various kinds of responsibility for historic buildings will find this clearly written, jargon-free work a fruitful source of guidance and information. Some of the highlighted features : • Gain a valuable insight into the building conservation world • Benefit from the world’s leading authority • Easy to understand, jargon-free source of guidance and information

In recent years building failures and the resulting lawsuits and awards for damages have frequently been in the news. The biggest headlines may have been reserved for structural failures and complete collapses. But we should not forget the less newsworthy failures such as leaky roofs, damp walls, dropped foundations and rotted timber.
This book gives practical guidance on the prevention of failure by describing the nature and cause of the most common defects in buildings, and then shows how they should be avoided in design and construction.

Looking to the future, “Intelligent Skins” sets out the principles for the design of the intelligent building envelope. It highlights an exciting new approach to the area, where the fabric of the building responds to external changes and internal demands.
The prime objective is to control internal environments through a responsive building fabric rather than by energy consuming building services systems. The authors examine the potential for integral intelligence within the fabric of the building and explore the evolution of information technology and smart materials which have allowed a whole new category of design principles to be created. Some of the highlighted features : • Gain a comprehensive knowledge of the evolution of the “Intelligent Skin” • Explores a new approach to Intelligent Buildings, focusing on the fabric of the building responding to external changes and internal demands • Includes over twenty cutting-edge international case studies

Despite growing international awareness of the presence and significance of ruined buildings and archaeological sites, and the increasingly sophisticated technology available for the collection of data about them, these sites continue to be at risk across the globe.
Conservation of Ruins defines and describes these risks, which range from neglect, to destructive archaeology, and even well-meaning intervention in the name of tourism. The book provides detailed, practical instruction on the conservation and stabilisation of ruins by structural and non-structural means, as well as describing the procedures and conditions that need to be in place to ensure the protection of our important historic sites. In considering aspects of architectural conservation, archaeology and ecology together for the first time, this book provides an integrated, holistic view of this international topic that will be essential reading for those working in this field Some of the highlighted features : • The only book that integrates philosophy, practical conservation, archaeology and ecology of ruined buildings and their states • Demonstrates essential principles using international case studies • Examines the key threats to ruins, and how to protect against them

Laptops–call them notebooks, portable computers, or whatever else you like–are tightly engineered items. It’s hard to get all the required components to obey stringent performance and power-management requirements, and still fit into a small case. The job usually requires a custom motherboard and other specialized components, and so the laptop owner who wants to upgrade his or her machine faces a much more difficult task than the owner of a desktop machine with a similar wish.
One can swap out the hard drive, add more RAM, and make tweaks in software, but almost everything else requires the addition of external components, which kind of defeat the purpose of a laptop. That’s the message the reader takes away from Scott Mueller’s Upgrading and Repairing Laptops. It’s not Mueller’s fault that such computers are hard to do much with, and that your best upgrade procedure is often a visit to an auction site.
That said, Mueller does a great job of explaining how laptops work–how the engineers went about cramming all those heat-generating components into those miniature chassis in the first place. He also explains a lot of interesting component theory, such as how magnetic hard drives store data and how various DVD standards differ. The information makes for good reading, and comes in handy when you’re shopping. He also demonstrates his skill–long well-reputed among builders and repairers of desktop machines–in teaching diagnostics. He explains, for example, how to test a laptop power supply, and why you should consider it a prime suspect in a malfunctioning computer even if the LEDs come on and the cooling fan spins. A CD-ROM features videos that show disassembly procedures–a strategy that works better than photographs and numbered steps. –David Wall

Adobe Photoshop is one of the most important computer programs of our age. It’s made photo editing a commonplace thing, something for the everyperson. Still, Photoshop can be a scary thing (especially that first purchase price!), comprising a jungle of menus and panels and tools and options and shortcuts as well as a bewildering array of add-ons and plug-ins. And that’s why you’re holding this book in your hands. And why I wrote it. And why Wiley published it.
You want to make sense of Photoshop — or, at the very least, be able to work competently and efficiently in the program, accomplishing those tasks that need to get done. You want a reference that discusses how things work and what things do, not in a technogeek or encyclopedic manner, but rather as an experienced friend might explain something to you. Although step-by-step explanations are okay if they show how something works, you don’t need rote recipes that don’t apply to the work you do. You don’t mind discovering tricks, as long as they can be applied to your images and artwork in a productive, meaningful manner. You’re in the right place!

Microsoft solved this problem in PowerPoint 2007 by redesigning the user interface with a tabbed toolbar that makes features easy to locate and use. PowerPoint 2007 also boasts improved graphics, additional templates, the ability to save custom layouts, and improved collaboration through SharePoint. One thing Microsoft hasn’t improved is its poor documentation. To learn the ins and outs of all the features in PowerPoint 2007, Microsoft merely offers online help. If you’re familiar with previous versions of the program, you may be lost the first time you fire up the new PowerPoint; or you would be if it weren’t for PowerPoint 2007: The Missing Manual.
This new book, written specifically for this version of the software, not only offers the basics of how to create, save, set up, run, and print a basic bullets-and-background slideshow, but takes you into the world of multimedia, animation, and interactivity. You’ll learn how to add pictures, sound, video, animated effects, and controls (buttons and links) to their slides, along with ways to pull text, spreadsheets, and animations created in other programs. You can also create your own reusable design templates and learn to automate repetitive tasks with macros. Learn how to take advantage of advanced functions (such as adding custom background images) that existed in previous PowerPoint versions, but were so cleverly hidden that few people ever found them.

Less expensive and more environmentally appropriate than conventional engineering approaches, constructed ecosystems are a promising technology for environmental problem solving. Graduate students need an introductory text that details the biology and the ecology of this rapidly developing discipline, known as ecological engineering.
“Ecological Engineering: Principles and Practice” fills this need by describing ecological concepts and theory and demonstrating their application to constructed ecosystems. Designed as a textbook for a semester length graduate-level course, the text introduces the major concepts and methods of ecological engineering along with this new discipline’s most important real-world applications: treatment wetlands, microcosms, composting systems, restoration ecology, soil bioengineering, and invasive species control. The text surveys the field with an introductory chapter on definitions and principles, six chapters treating major sub-fields, a chapter on applications of economics, and a conclusion chapter with synthetic propositions with comments on education and future directions.

In a major engineering project, a systematic exploration and investigation of a new site might be carried out and reported on by a consultant specialising in geology, geophysics or engineering (with a detailed knowledge of soil and rock mechanics). However, even when the services of a specialist consultant are employed, an engineer will still have overall supervision and responsibility for the project.
Therefore, the engineer must have enough understanding of geology to know how and when to use the expert knowledge of consultants, and to be able to read theiir reports intellegently, judge their reliability, and appreciate how the conditions described might effect the project.

Architects across the world have to design buildings that need to comply with strict seismic codes. All too often the need to comply with the code is put ahead of the design of the building, resulting in dull and functional architecture.
Andrew Charleson’s book shows how to make structural requirements an integral part of the architectural design process, not an add-on. Using non-technical language and detailed illustrations Charleson shows how achieving structural standards need not limit the scope for architectural innovation and high design standards in seismically active zones.
With enough theory to satisfy architects without swamping them in technical data, Seismic Design for Architects is a state-of-the-art summary of designing buildings where being prepared for the worst is an everyday fact of life.
Some of highlighted features of this book :
• Written for architects, emphasising design over analysis
• Key concepts conveyed with visual material to allow architects to appreciate the design solutions available to them
• Draws experience from a wide variety of national and international design codes

Overview :
The word tensegrity results from the contraction of “Tensional” and “Integrity”, a word created by Richard Buckminster Fuller. He went on to describe tensegrity structures as “Islands of compression in an ocean of tension”. Renй Motro has developed a comprehensive definition which is “systems in a stable self equilibriated system comprising a discontinuous set of compressed components inside a continuum of tensioned components”.
This publication represents the life work of a leading exponent of a revolutionary and exciting method of structural design.
Some of the highlighted features :
• Represents the life work of a leading exponent of a revolutionary and exciting method of structural design
• Applicable to architecture as an established structural system, can also be applied to other fields
• Design professionals will be able to design better structures. Interested non-professionals will experience the great pleasure of being able to say “I understand why the Hisshorn tower stands up”

The year out, or internship, in a professional practice can be the most rewarding experience in an architectural student’s education. It can also be a shock to the system to find that architectural working practices are very different to architectural study. This book provides a beginner’s guide to professional practice and a step-by-step guide on how to find the placement that best suits your goals. It is the fourth title in the successful ‘Seriously Useful Guides…’ series.
In order to give you a real insight into professional experience, this guide includes real
life case studies from students who have been through the experience and from practices that have taken them on. It guides you through the steps of finding a placement, outlines the norms and expectations for internship in different countries, and discusses codes of office behavior and professional ethics. Contemporary architectural
practices are becoming increasingly diverse and this guide outlines some Practical experience/Internship choices, providing cases studies of award wining firms that offer practical experience. These case studies range from conventional practices based on the art of building, to practices based on digital media or contemporary urbanism. Finally, the term ‘critical practice’ is becoming increasingly important, and the book provides some definitions and examples of critically based architectural practices.
Also in the Seriously Useful Guides Series:
* The Crit
* The The Portfolio
* The Dissertation
* Provides a valuable step-by-step guide on how to make the most of your time in practice
* Prepares you for what to expect from an office and lets you know what an office expects from you
* Includes interviews with students, professionals and tutors who have been through the experience, to give you the best, first hand, advice

I have a copy of the first edition of this book and am still mesmerized by it. When it first came out, everyone I knew at design school who bought it felt like the information and techniques had given them an out-of-body-experience and it quickly became THE book to own, learn from, and emulate. Anyone who buys this book and applies the material and techniques will become better at drawing, rendering, and creative presentation methods…it is a sure-fire way to achieve “star power” in your office and in front of your clients!
Summary: awesome resource
Rating: 5
great book! Out of the dozens of hand rendering guides I looked at, this was by far the best and the easiest to learn from. It tells you what pencils, markers, and tools to buy to achieve certain effects, and gives you step-by-step rendering instructions for tons of different types of materials and lighting situations. I highly recommend this- in fact, it should be mandatory for interior design students!
Summary: Outstanding book
Rating: 5
It’s really hard to say too many things about this book. Even older editions of Color Drawing are great, but this newest one goes above and beyond the call of duty. In an age when a lot of books get re-released as new editions with few substantive changes, Color Drawing breaks the mold by updating the techniques with current technology (i.e. Photoshop). It’s great to see that the author and publisher realize that pure hand-drawing and rendering is quickly becoming a thing of the past and that the practitioners of today and tomorrow need to have excellent computer skills too. This book is full of very useful tips for combining Photoshop with hand drawings to create great effects. So even if you have an earlier edition, do yourself a favor and buy the new one anyway because you will learn a lot.

This is the standard for rendering in architecture and interior design as far as I am concerned. It will most definitely become a required textbook for my classes in visual presentation in the years to come. Doyle takes you step-by-step into the process of rendering with marker, color pencil, and pastels. But he doesn’t just spoon feed you the recipe for each material rendering, he presents the basis for a process that allows you to render virtually any material not found in the book.

The Top 100 Masterpieces of Classical Music: Volumes 1 - 10
The Top 100 Classical Music series is a must have for novices of classical music, or someone already into the classics but wishes to amassa an “essentials” collection. This particular cd’s span the Romantic Era, and although the 19th century saw much more music than what is covered on these recordings, this is nevertheless a brilliant and essential body of works. The Wedding March of Mendelsshon’s Midsummer Night’s Dream (played in weddings all over the world I’m assuming), Franz Lizst Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 (The Looney Tunes Theme Music by the way) and other jewels of the era, such as the Blue Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss, the operetta overtures of Franz Von Suppe, Verdi’s preludes to such operas as Nabucco and La Traviata, Wagner’s intense, dramatic music for his Ring of the Nibelung operas, regarded as the epitome and the zenith of Romantic Era opera, and the music of other composers such as Tchaikovsky, Bizet, Sibelius, Rimsky Korsakov and many others. I highly recommend this cd to anyone wanting to sample and taste what Romantic Era music was all about.

A third or more of the energy consumption of industrialized countries is expended on creating acceptable thermal and lighting conditions in buildings. As a result, building heat transfer is keenly important to the design of buildings, and the resulting analytical theory forms the basis of most design procedures. Analytical Theory of Building Heat Transfer is the first comprehensive reference of its kind, a one-volume compilation of current findings on heat transfer relating to the thermal behavior of buildings, forming a logical basis for current design procedures.

To continue developing existing building types in an intelligent way is a crucial task in the field of residential building. A deeper understanding of the underlying types is indispensable for the success of the individual design, as well as for ensuring that tried and tested structures can be utilized, repeated, and varied in a wide variety of situations.
For this typology of residential buildings, the authors have developed systematic new presentations of the most innovative types. Each individual volume lays out the possibilities for using and transforming a particular form of residential structure.
The first volume deals with the various types of the courtyard house, which utilizes the courtyard as an intimate outdoor living space. A presentation of the courtyard as a building block of the city is followed by coverage of the complete spectrum of types - cluster, network, carpet, terraces, etc.
The second volume is devoted to the various types of row house, a particularly widespread form of residential structure. A general discussion of the row as organizing principle - the row as urban building block, linear space, ways of handling corners - is followed by the systematic presentation of the different types.
Within each type, variants are distinguished according to how they organize space, their number of floors, etc. The range of possible solutions is presented in uniform ground plans newly drawn to scale.

The Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio was one of the most influential figures that the field of architecture has ever produced. For classical architects, the term Palladian stands for a vocabulary of architectural forms embodying perfection and beauty. Of even greater significance than Palladio’s buildings is his treatise I quattro libri dell’architettura (The Four Books On Architecture), the most successful architectural treatise of the Renaissance and one of the two or three most important books in the literature of architecture. First published in Italian in 1570, it has been translated into every major Western language.
This is the first English translation of Palladio in over 250 years, making it the only translation available in modern English. Until now, English-language readers have had to rely mostly on a facsimile of Isaac Ware’s 1738 translation and the eighteenth-century engravings prepared for that text. This new translation by Robert Tavernor and Richard Schofield contains Palladio’s original woodcuts, reproduced in facsimile and positioned correctly, adjacent to the text. The book also contains a glossary that explains technical terms in their original context, a bibliography of recent Palladio research, and an introduction to Palladio and his times.
The First Book discusses building materials and techniques, as well as the five orders of architecture: Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, and Composite. Palladio describes the characteristics of each order and illustrates them. The Second Book discusses private town houses and country estates, almost all designed by Palladio. The Third Book discusses streets, bridges, piazzas, and basilicas, most of ancient Roman origin. The Fourth Book discusses ancient Roman temples, including the Pantheon.

Bamboo materials are well available in the world. Bamboo has much shorter maturity than trees, thus can be harvested with shorter cycles of plantation. Despite the fact that human society has a long history of using bamboo, there is still a lack of modern and industrialized application of bamboo materials in construction. Promoting the application of bamboo in construction could provide a potential solution to the sustainable, green and environment-friendly development of construction industry.”Modern Bamboo Structures” is the first of its kind covering the applications of bamboo materials in modern structures. The following topics are covered in this book: properties of bamboo materials and components; design, experimental testing, and ****ysis of bamboo structures and components; modern bamboo buildings and bridges; composites of bamboo, timber and other materials; bamboo reinforced concrete; comparative studies of timber and bamboo structures; adhesives, joints, and engineered bamboo products; environmental, sustainability and ecological issues; and, structural and constructional applications of other natural and non-conventional materials. These proceedings of the First International Conference on Modern Bamboo Structures (ICBS-2007, Changsha, China, 28-30 October 2007) include the state-of-the-art on materials, design, analysis, testing, manufacturing, and construction of modern bamboo structures. “Modern Bamboo Structures” will be essential for researchers, engineers and administrators involved in structural engineering, civil engineering, agriculture engineering, forestry, environmental engineering and urban development.

This new edition of an informative and accessible book guides building surveyors and facilities managers through the key aspects of property maintenance and continues to be of value to both students and practitioners.
With the increasing cost of new-build, effective maintenance of existing building stock is becoming ever more important and building maintenance work now represents nearly half of total construction output in the UK.
Building Maintenance Management provides a comprehensive profile of the many aspects of property maintenance. This second edition has been updated throughout, with sections on outsourcing; maintenance planning; benchmarking and KPIs; and current trends in procurement routes (including partnering and the growth of PFI) integrated into the text. There is also a new chapter on the changing context within which maintenance is carried out, largely concerned with its relationship to facilities management. More coverage is given of maintenance organisations and there are major updates to relevant aspects of health and safety and to contract forms.

How can you tell if the materials and components you are specifying have a low environmental impact? A full life-cycle assessment is a complex, time-consuming and expensive process; the environmental ratings summarised in this Guide provide a quick and easy way for designers and specifiers to assess their options.
The relative environmental performance of over 250 materials and components have been assessed in this guide, using carefully researched, quantitative data derived from the BRE Environmental Database. A wide range of alternative specifications are provided for:
· walls
· floor systems
· floor finishes
· roofs
· windows
· doors
· ceilings
· paints
· insulation
· landscaping.
The performance of each specification is measured against a range of environmental impacts including:
· climate change
· toxicity
· fossil fuel and ozone depletion
· levels of emissions and pollutants
· mineral and water extraction.
Environmental performance is indicated by a simple to use A-B-C rating system. To further aid specifiers, guidance on capital coasts, typical replacement intervals and information on recycling is also provided for each material and component.
An important part of BREEAM, the BRE’s widely accepted scheme to improve the environmental performance of buildings, The Green Guide to Specification is an essential tool for architects, surveyors, building managers and property owners seeking to reduce the environmental impacts of building materials through informed choice.

This book investigates the perception and appropriation of places across intervals of time and culture. The particular concern of the volume is to bring together fresh empirical research and animate it by contact with theoretical sophistication, without letting that overwhelm the material. The chapters establish the continuity of a particular physical object under discussion and show it in at least two different historical perspectives, in which recognizable features are shown in different lights. The results are often surprising, because we tend to have an idea of a historic place as having an enduring meaning, so it can be rewarding to learn about earlier constructions of meaning that involve the same building.

The chance of being claimed against is now a major risk factor for every building designer, engineer, quantity surveyor and project manager. Apart from the cases that go to court, many other claims are settled before they reach that stage. The cost of insurance to meet claims is now a substantial component of every practice’s overheads. Sensible risk management can identify the potential sources of claims, reduce their likelihood, warn of impending trouble and control how the claim is to be defended.
This book explains how to plan a risk management strategy and suggests techniques that can supplement the practice’s existing management procedures without imposing unnecessary bureaucracy. It attaches as much importance to the interaction of risk between members of the design team as to the risk profile of the practice itself.
The first part defines risk and its origins, discusses how risk can arise in the various professions and types of practice, and how it interacts between the professions, compares quality assurance with risk management, and advises on the relations between the practice, its insurers and its lawyers. It concludes with advice on how to create a risk strategy and system for the office.
The second part is devoted to techniques and covers: setting up the appointment; creation of the team; managing the project; the risks of CDM; the complications of procurement; and drafting, awarding and administering the building contract. Risk implications of the major contract forms are discussed in detail. It concludes with advice on the handling of claims.
The book contains references to a number of legal cases to illustrate the risks discussed. It is recommended reading not only for the individual professions (architect, engineer, QS, project manger), but for all of them collectively in understanding how the risk of one profession can become the risk of any of his fellow team members.

Steelwork offers the opportunity for architectural expression, as well as being structurally versatile and adaptable material. Good detailing is vital because it affects structural performance, costs, buildability and, perhaps most importantly, appearance. While the choice of the structural form is often the province of the structural engineer, architects should have a broad appreciation of the factors leading to the selection of the structure and its details. Traditionally, most detailing of connections is the responsibility of the steelwork fabricator, but for exposed steelwork, detailing is of much more interest to the architect, as it impacts on the aesthetics of the structure. In this respect it is important that designers appreciate the common fabrication and erection techniques, which may exert a strong influence on the method and approach to the detailing of modern steelwork in buildings.

The city is more than just a sum of its buildings; it is the sum of its communities. The most successful urban communities are very often those that are the most diverse - in terms of income, age, family structure and ethnicity - and yet poor urban design and planning can stifle the very diversity that makes communities successful.
Just as poor urban design can lead to sterile monoculture, successful planning can support the conditions needed for diverse communities. Emily Talen explores the linkage between urban forms and social diversity, and how one impacts the other. Learning the lessons from past successes and failures, and building from detailed case studies of different neighborhoods, Design for Diversity provides urban designers and architects with design strategies and tools to ensure that their work sustains and nurtures social diversity.
* Explores the link between urban form and social diversity
* Based on detailed studies of socially diverse neighborhoods in cities
* Outlines urban design strategies to support diverse communities

What if environmentally damaged landscapes could not only be remediated from an ecological standpoint, but also designed to replenish an entire community as well as the nature surrounding it? The Handbook of Regenerative Landscape Design incorporates ecology, engineering, sociology, and design elements into a new paradigm for environmental restoration and the renewal of urban and cultural sites.
This is the first resource in the field to examine the collaborative roles of scientists, landscape architects, and urban planners in transforming degraded landscapes into sustainable communities for both people and wildlife. Top practitioners and theorists from different fields and perspectives contribute innovative case studies that converge in their emphasis on new uses for reclaimed land, rather than a return to its original state.
In addition, this book is one in only a handful to address the system conditions necessary for the repair of severely degraded landscapes, especially in an urban context. It elucidates the most suitable remediation strategies for treating degraded environments such as industrial landfills, mining sites, buried urban rivers, heavily polluted or effectively destroyed wetlands, Superfund sites, and abandoned factories.
Bringing the perspectives of landscape architects, scientists, and urban planners to a wider audience, the Handbook of Regenerative Landscape Design demonstrates how ecological landscape restoration processes can facilitate sociological and urban renewal initiatives.

This unique book addresses the issue of sustainability from the point of view of landscape architecture, dealing with professional practices of planners, designers and landscape managers.
This second edition contains updated and new material reflecting the developments in the field during the last five years, addressing the relationship between landscape architecture and sustainability in a comprehensive way.
Much in the text is underpinned by landscape ecology, in contrast to the idea of landscape as only appealing to the eye or aspiring cerebrally to be fine art. As this exceptional cast of contributors argue, landscape is and must be much more than this; landscape architecture is about making places which are biologically wholesome, socially just and spiritually rewarding.
Landscape and Sustainability establishes that the sustainability agenda needs a new mindset among professionals. The question to be answered first and foremost is, is it sustainable? The chapters in the book move progressively from theory to practice, from the global to the local scale and from issues of policy and planning through to detailed design and implementation and on to long-term maintenance and management. The contributors raise and re-examine a complex array of research, policy and professional issues and agendas to contribute to the necessary ongoing debate about the future of both landscape and sustainability

The tropical belt - where large areas of South East Asia, India, Africa and parts of both North and South America are located - forms the biggest landmass in the world and has one of the highest numbers of rapidly developing cities. Coincidentally, architecture in these regions shares common problems, the most easily identifiable being the tropical conditions of climate and natural environment. The context for architecture here is fraught with conflicts between tradition and modernization, massive influx of rural poor into urban areas, poorly managed rapid urban development as well as the cultural and social strain of globalization.
Many local and overseas architects, planners and city fathers are interested in the social and environmental dimensions of these areas that contribute towards short terms solutions and long term sustainable developments. This book, developed from the first conference of the International Network for Tropical Architecture, supplies a wealth of information from experts worldwide covering the cultural, environmental and technical aspects of thinking, researching and designing for the tropics.
* Provides a holistic view of the subject, covering both technical and cultural issues
* Includes a variety of tropical case studies by an international team of experts
* Essential reading for architects wishing to develop their skills, technology and knowledge of these rapidly changing cities.

Buildings are responsible for 50% of C02 emissions and their design has become the focus of intense technical scrutiny. Knowing how to build more technically efficient, or more ecologically and being able to assemble the social resources to do so requires different forms of knowledge and practice. There is wide contestation over the optimal pathways to greener buildings design and great diversity in practices of sustainable architecture.
This edited book brings together leading researchers from across the European Union and North America to both illustrate the diversity of practice and to provide a critical commentary on this key debate. The reader is provided with an introduction to competing perspectives on the sustainable architecture debate; international exemplars of differing practice and an overview of new theoretical and methodological resources for understanding and meeting the conceptual, social and technical challenges of sustainable architecture.

Widely used in architectural circles in the heat of discussion, the recurrent use of particular words and terms has evolved a language of design jargon. Commonly found in architectural literature and journalism, in critical design debate and especially in student project reviews, Archispeak can seem insular and perplexing to others and — particularly to the new architectural student — often incomprehensible.
There is a need to translate architectural design concepts into spoken and written commentary — each word in use embodying a precise and universally accepted architectural meaning. If we explore the vocabulary of this language we gain insight to design good practice and to collective understanding of what constitutes a refined architecture. This unique illustrated guide will help students understand the nuances of this specialized language and help them in communicating their own design ideas.

Has globalization replaced colonization as a threat to the heritage and identity of the Middle East City of the twenty-first century? How did colonial influences change the urban form of the Arab capitals? And is today’s hybridization of architectural and urban discourse affecting the development of the cities, their spatial planning and design?
These are just some of the questions addressed by Yasser Elsheshtawy and his contributors using case study material for a diverse range of cities in the Arab world, included Algiers, Lake Tunis, Cairo, Khartoum, Baghdad, Sana’a and Dubai.

This well illustrated text forms a critical appraisal of the place and direction of architecture and urban design in a new world order at the start of the 21st century.
The book defines architectural and environmental goals for the New Age by ****ysing recent contemporary work for its responsiveness to important social and environmental issues and comparing it to successful precedents in architecture. It argues that this new sustainable approach to architecture should be recognised as a new development of mainstream architectural history.
This practical guide illustrates current social and natural resource issues to aid architects in their approach to future design.
Environmental economics is presented as a potential bridge over the divide between the expectations of the business sector and the concerns of environmental lobbies. Through examples and case studies, an accessible ****ysis of carefully researched data, drawn from primary sources over four continents, allows the author to outline the current urgency for architects and urban designers to respond with real commitment to current and future changing contexts.
This book expresses a holistic vision and proposes a value system in response to the diagnosis. It includes: sound architectural and environmental ethics; end user involvement in the design process and technological advances aimed at sustainable resource use.
Includes international case studies from Europe, North America, the Developing world including South Africa, South America and Central Asia.

Building on his pioneering work on the management of technology and innovation in his first book, Managing the Flow of Technology, Thomas J. Allen of MIT has joined with award-winning German architect Gunter Henn of HENN Architekten to produce a book that explores the combined use of two management tools to make the innovation process most effective: organizational structure and physical space. They present research demonstrating how organizational structure and physical space each affect communication among peoplein this case, engineers, scientists, and others in technical organizationsand they illustrate how organizations can transform both to increase the transfer of technical knowledge and maximize the communication for inspiration that is central to the innovation process. Allen and Henn illustrate their points with discussions of well-known buildings around the world, including Audis corporate headquarters, Steelcases corporate design center, and the Corning Glass Becker building, as well as several of Gunter Henns own projects, including the Skoda automotive factory in the Czech Republic and the Faculty for Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Munich. Allen and Henn then demonstrate the principles developed in their work by discussing in detail one example in which organizational structure and physical space were combined successfully to promote innovation with impressive results: HENN Architektens Project House for the BMW Group Research and Innovation Centre in Munich, cited by Business Week (April 24, 2006) in naming BMW one of the worlds most innovative companies.
Professor Thomas Allen is the originator of the Allen curve. In the late 1970s, Tom Allen undertook a project to determine how the distance between engineers offices coincided with the level of regular technical communication between them. The results of that research, now known as the Allen Curve, revealed a distinct correlation between distance and frequency of communication (i.e. the more distance there is between people 50 meters or more to be exact the less they will communicate). This principle has been incorporated into forward-thinking commercial design ever since, in, for example, The Decker Engineering Building in New York, the Steelcase Corporate Development Center in Michigan, and BMWs Research Center in Germany.
*Professor Allen of MIT is known worldwide for “the Allen curve” which is taught and cited in all management literature about innovation
*Gunter Henn is a renowned architect in Germany known for his innovative industrial building designs such as BMW projecthaus and the Skoda factory
*Shows in clear terms–based on actual research and implementation–how managers can organize the work, workers, and their physical space to maximize the potential for innovation.

Elaborately conceived, grandly constructed insane asylums—ranging in appearance from classical temples to Gothic castles—were once a common sight looming on the outskirts of American towns and cities. Many of these buildings were razed long ago, and those that remain stand as grim reminders of an often cruel system. For much of the nineteenth century, however, these asylums epitomized the widely held belief among doctors and social reformers that insanity was a curable disease and that environment—architecture in particular—was the most effective means of treatment.
In The Architecture of Madness, Carla Yanni tells a compelling story of therapeutic design, from America’s earliest purpose—built institutions for the insane to the asylum construction frenzy in the second half of the century. At the center of Yanni’s inquiry is Dr. Thomas Kirkbride, a Pennsylvania-born Quaker, who in the 1840s devised a novel way to house the mentally diseased that emphasized segregation by severity of illness, ease of treatment and surveillance, and ventilation. After the Civil War, American architects designed Kirkbride-plan hospitals across the country.
Before the end of the century, interest in the Kirkbride plan had begun to decline. Many of the asylums had deteriorated into human warehouses, strengthening arguments against the monolithic structures advocated by Kirkbride. At the same time, the medical profession began embracing a more neurological approach to mental disease that considered architecture as largely irrelevant to its treatment.
Generously illustrated, The Architecture of Madness is a fresh and original look at the American medical establishment’s century-long preoccupation with therapeutic architecture as a way to cure social ills.
Carla Yanni is associate professor of art history at Rutgers University and the author of Nature’s Museums: Victorian Science and the Architecture of Display.
